Like a Lighthouse in the Night

The light of a lighthouse in the night is unlike any other. A symbol of protection—or even salvation—it always reveals itself gradually from within the darkness. Designed to be seen from afar, it is accompanied by a slow, soothing circular motion.

It is this light that inspired the renowned Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür in his 2016 piano trio Lichttürme (Lighthouses). Or rather, these lights, since the title—given in the plural—suggests multiple beacons. Swept by powerful swells in the lower register, the score seems to stir them into motion, regularly bringing forth shimmering rays in the upper register.

This delicate shimmer can also be found in Spell (1973) by Per Nørgård, a major figure in Danish music. In English, spell refers both to the act of spelling and to an enchantment or act of sorcery. The work unfolds through numerous seamless transitions, creating an almost hypnotic effect.

Finally, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 (1944) is a masterpiece that, after a long and bewildered quest, searches for—and ultimately finds—the light… almost miraculously.
