This special evening brings together music and calligraphy through the lens of the Chaconne, the final movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 2 for solo violin.

Through musical performances, talks and the screening of the documentary The Bow and the Brush (L’Archet et le Pinceau), we will explore the profound connections between these two arts of gesture, breath and inner expression. The movement of the bow and that of the brush, musical architecture and calligraphic line, reveal remarkably similar creative processes.

A conversation with Akira Mizubayashi, the Japanese writer and scholar renowned for the distinctive character of his work and celebrated for his refined, musical style, exploring the relationships between memory, history and music. His writing is deeply nourished by classical music. He structures his novels like musical compositions, with themes and variations, often centred on instruments, such as the violin in Broken Soul (Âme brisée) and the viola in Queen of Hearts (Reine de cœur).

Screening of the documentary The Bow and the Brush (L’Archet et le Pinceau) (FR)

Directed by Raphaëlle Aellig Régnier, this documentary explores the fascinating encounter between Western music and Zen art. It captures a mesmerizing performance in which the Buddhist master calligrapher Kanshô Miyashita creates Japanese calligraphy to the rhythm of Bach’s Chaconne, performed by violinist Tedi Papavrami.

An invitation to discover Bach’s universe from a new perspective, at the crossroads of listening, observation and contemplation.
