Where Excellence Meets Purpose
Supporting the next generation of artists
At the heart of our mission lies the transmission of musical excellence to future generations. Yet our mission goes beyond artistic training alone: it affirms that another humanity is possible.
By supporting the growth of our young artists at a decisive moment in their personal and professional journeys, our community of donors helps create the conditions in which extraordinary talent can fully emerge – often against the odds – and where what once seemed impossible becomes possible. In doing so, we collectively help sustain a place where excellence, beauty, peace and nature are not abstract ideals but lived experience.
At its core, the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel is an international centre of musical excellence for talented young artists, selected through a highly competitive process from around the world and attracted by one of the finest training programmes, in a haven of peace, nature and concentration. Through long-term artist residencies, the Music Chapel supports young artists at a decisive moment in their artistic lives, as they launch their careers, through companionship with renowned Masters in residence and regular concert opportunities in Belgium and beyond.
A Queen’s project made possible by generosity and commitment
Since its founding in 1939, the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel has only been able to fully pursue its mission thanks to the trust placed in it by many supporters. From the very beginning, the commitment of the de Launoit family was decisive in realizing Queen Elisabeth’s vision, anchoring the institution in a tradition of private patronage – one that endures to this day.
The Music Chapel’s funding model is unique among cultural institutions in Belgium, closer to philanthropic models in the United States than to European public funding traditions. Today, less than 10% of its resources come from public subsidies, while more than 90% rely on private support. Patrons, families, foundations and other private partners make possible what is essentially a simple yet powerful idea: supporting artists also means supporting what they bring to the world – beauty in times of uncertainty, perseverance in the face of hardship, and peace through shared artistic experience. The Music Chapel’s model is built on long-term loyalty and personal commitment, rather than short-term funding cycles.
It is precisely this durable and steadfast engagement that allows the Music Chapel to pursue a new ambition, fully aligned with its raison d’être. The recent expansion to the Argenteuil Estate, made possible through the generosity of the Périer-D’Ieteren family, marks a decisive step in the development of an international music campus unique in Europe. This expansion strengthens the Music Chapel’s capacity to welcome artists simultaneously on site, deepen artistic transmission, and affirm its position among the world’s leading centres for musical excellence.
