“Magnificat anima mea Dominum”: these are the words of the Virgin at the moment of the “Visitation “. Mary thus reaffirms her humility before the will of the Lord. As a reward, heaven jubilates in a set of triumphal trumpets, joined by the choir.
Next: a work of secular inspiration: A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare of which Mendelssohn composed the introduction at the age of 17. Fifteen years later, he completed the score. The marvelous and fairy-like character of the whole places this work at the top of his art.
