Sir András Schiff began playing the piano at the age of five with E. Vadász. He studied at the Franz-Liszt University of Music in Budapest with P. Kadosa, G. Kurtág and F. Rados, then in London with G. Malcolm, where he was a finalist in the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1975. He left Hungary in 1979. He settled in London, became a British citizen in 2001 and was made a Knight of the British Empire (KBE). Sir András Schiff is also known for his masterclasses, which focus on the works of Bach and Beethoven.
