Artist Diploma - Stéphanie Huang
Arensky is certainly not a very popular composer, compared with his contemporaries, because he was unable to find his own way. Yet he composed several little-known genre pieces for cello and piano, which are real gems and will open the recital, taking the listener into an enchanted world. One of Arensky’s great inspirations was Frédéric Chopin: his sonata for cello and piano is the only sonata he composed for an instrument other than the piano, and remains one of the finest works in the cello repertoire. The two-cello quintet formation is ideal for closing the recital, with Arensky’s friend Sergei Taneyev and the last movement of his first two-cello quintet. This is in the form of themes and variations, each more inventive than the last. The master and pupil will be on stage, surrounded by his sister and long-time friends.
