Paul Wiener

viola

Born in 2001, Paul Wiener began his musical studies on the violin with his mother. At the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris, he discovered the viola and its low C string and never looked back. Playing the instrument once owned by his great-grandfather, he won Second Prize at the Concours national des jeunes altistes in 2019. He entered the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris in 2020 to study viola with David Gaillard and, in 2022, also joined Stéphanie-Marie Degand’s violin class. He earned his master’s degree in viola in 2025 and also holds a bachelor’s degree in chamber music and two French Diplômes d’État in music teaching.

Selected for the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2022, Paul Wiener played with the Verbier Festival Orchestra in 2023 and 2024. He also joined the Orchestre de chambre de Paris academy as a violist in 2022 and returned as a violinist for the 2025–2026 season. In 2025, he was admitted to the Orchestre de Paris’s Académie Studio. He was also shortlisted for the 2025 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition.

His interests extend beyond the orchestral repertoire. He has taken part in the illustrated concert Petite Sœur Lueur and explored music from the Arab world with violinist Zied Zouari through a partnership between the Conservatoire de Paris and the Fondation Hasdrubal in Tunisia. He co-founded the Collectif des altistes français, giving him an outlet for his passion for arranging classical music for viola ensemble. At the Conservatoire de Paris, Christophe Robert introduced him to historically informed performance, which he has explored both in string quartets and with Le Consort, co-founded by Théotime Langlois de Swarte.

In 2026, Paul Wiener continued to work with orchestras whose academies he had attended, as well as the Orchestre national de France and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. He also pursued further studies in violin and chamber music, the latter with the Quatuor Simone.

Since March 2026, Paul Wiener has been an Artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, under the direction of Miguel da Silva.
