Death and the Maiden
Victoria Vassilenko, piano
F. Schubert: String Quartet No. 14, in D minor, D. 810, “Death & the Maiden”
R Schumann: Piano Quintet, in E-flat major, op. 44
Notable for its architecture, the Sonata for Violin and Piano develops from a cyclical motif whose lulling rhythm is endlessly repeated. Presented to Ysaÿe as a wedding gift, it includes a third movement that is free of formal constraints and whose intense lyricism evokes the genre of romances. It ends with a canon in which the instruments form an alliance against all odds, before culminating in exultant joy.
