The creativity of the young Mendelssohn is fully expressed in his first three keyboard quartets. keyboard quartets. If Op. 2 is already distinguished by an Adagio with daring modulations and a short Intermezzo replacing the usual Scherzo, Op. 3 proves to be the most accomplished, notably by its thematic coherence, with a single motif linking the first themes of the four movements.
The “eternal whirlwind” of the Scherzo pleased Goethe, who found in it a poetic and poetic and marvelous character.
