De creativiteit van de jonge Mendelssohn komt volop tot uiting in zijn eerste drie
Klavierkwartetten. Onderscheidt Opus 2 zich reeds door een Adagio met gewaagde
modulaties en een kort Intermezzo ter vervanging van het gebruikelijke Scherzo, Opus
3 blijkt het rijpst, met name door zijn thematische samenhang, eenzelfde motief dat de eerste thema’s van de vier bewegingen onderling verbindt. De ‘eeuwige werveling’
van het Scherzo beviel Goethe, die er een poëtisch en schitterend karakter in ontwaarde.
