J.S. Bach and C.P.E. Bach, heirs to a centuries-old musical tradition

Johann Sebastian Bach is the heir to generations of German composers who, throughout the 17th century, raised sacred music to an exceptional level. Following in the footsteps of Heinrich Schütz, Matthias Weckmann, Christof Bernhardt, Franz Tunder and Dietrich Buxtehude, among many others, Bach has left us an art of unprecedented expressive power.

J.S. Bach’s vocal and organ works represent both the apogee and the end of Baroque music. His sons and pupils, however, were to open up new horizons: among them Carl Philipp Emanuel, who left us a considerable body of work much admired by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

During a work session in July as part of the Contius Foundation in Leuven, young singers and organists worked on these repertoires under the guidance of a team of masters led by Reinoud Van Mechelen and Bernard Foccroulle. This concert in Waterloo church will present the results of their work, with the participation of these two artists.
