Programme Notes

This second evening brings together Brussels Philharmonic and the Flemish Radio Choir, under the direction of Kazushi Ōno, in a programme unfolding breath, memory, light, and creative visions. Soloists include Corina Belcea (Master in residence), Aleksey Shadrin (Associate Artist), Oleg Volkov (Artist in residence), and Eva Gevorgyan.
Air – Gustav Mahler, from Kindertotenlieder: “In diesem Wetter”
The final song of the cycle concentrates intense drama: the external storm reflects inner turmoil.
Oleg Volkov, former member of the Opéra National du Rhin and Artist in residence, emphasizes text, diction, and narrative flow.
Earth – Johannes Brahms, Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, op. 102
Although Brahms described his Double Concerto as “funny” and “playful,” the work stands as a block of granite: sparse orchestration, strong and demanding solo lines. Corina Belcea and Aleksey Shadrin reveal three striking movements – dramatic breadth, the suspended lyricism of the Andante, and the lively energy of the Finale – a concerto in which two voices respond to each other in shared virtuosity.
Water – Claude Debussy, La Mer
Debussy transforms the orchestra into a living organism: glimmers, currents, bursts of light, and flowing motion.
La Mer opens panoramas where air and water become sonic material – a space of light and breath at the heart of the evening.
Fire – Alexander Scriabin, Symphony No. 5, op. 60 “Prometheus – The Poem of Fire”
With Prometheus, he conceived a ritual where music, color, and mysticism meet: large orchestra, piano, female choir, and – ahead of its time — a “color organ” designed to fuse sound and light.
This vision gains a fresh resonance today through Nazanin Fakoor’s and Gerd Van Looy’s visual concept creation, inspired by both the Poem of Fire and Debussy’s radiant La Mer.
An invitation to experience this evening as an inner landscape in transformation.
