Angela Chan, violin
Born in Hong Kong, Chinese violinist Angela Chan has distinguished herself both as a soloist and as a chamber musician.
She is the winner of the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover (2024), where she also received the award for the best performance of the commissioned work. She won First Prize as well as the Concerto Prize at the Louis Spohr International Violin Competition (2017) and is a laureate of the Singapore International Violin Competition and the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition. She is the founder and violinist of the AYA Piano Trio, which was awarded First Prize at both the WDAV Chamber Music Competition and the Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition.
As a soloist, she has appeared with numerous orchestras, including the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the EOS Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Symphonia. In 2016, she was selected as soloist for a United States tour with the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. She has also given recitals in Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Hong Kong, Beijing, Xiamen, and Guiyang.
An active chamber musician, she has collaborated with internationally renowned artists including Nobuko Imai, Phillip Setzer, Hsin-Yun Huang, Peter Wiley, Gary Hoffman, Shmuel Ashkenasi and Marcy Rosen.
Her festival appearances, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, include the Heifetz International Music Institute, the Verbier Festival Academy, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Marlboro Music Festival.
Angela Chan began studying the violin at the age of three with her mother. She continued her studies in Beijing with Michael James Ma and Vera WeiLing Tsu, before working with Shmuel Ashkenasi, Pamela Frank, and Aaron Rosand at the Curtis Institute of Music. A full-scholarship recipient, she earned her Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory in the studio of Donald Weilerstein.
She is the first recipient of the Music and Dance Distinguished Performance Commendation Scheme awarded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and has received support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and the Lin Yao Ji Foundation.
Since September 2024, Angela Chan has been an Artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, working with Augustin Dumay.
