Jean Miannay, tenor
French tenor Jean Miannay stands out on the European scene today with his youthful lyric voice, enthusiasm, and natural stage presence. He studied at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne with Brigitte Balleys and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin under Scot Weir.
He is particularly acclaimed in generous, fresh, and energetic roles such as Nemorino in L’Elisir d’amore, Tonio in La Fille du régiment, and Nadir in Les Pêcheurs de perles.
“Very much at ease, Jean Miannay is a perfect tender, awkward, and simple-hearted Nemorino… His ‘Furtiva lagrima’ already shows great finesse.” — 24 Heures
“One cannot help but be impressed by Jean Miannay’s performance as Tonio, a role he embodies with total commitment. His voice, endowed with a rich timbre, displays striking precision in the attacks of the Act I finale; the famous high notes of the cavatina are projected with no difficulty in full chest voice.” — Résonance Lyrique
His career has led him to perform on prestigious stages such as the Chorégies d’Orange, and the opera houses of Strasbourg, Avignon, Massy, Vichy, Clermont-Ferrand, Lausanne, and Fribourg, as well as at Theater Magdeburg.
Convinced of the essential role of creation, he also devotes himself to bold artistic projects aimed at enriching and diversifying the repertoire. He notably created the role of Napoleon in Pierre Thilloy’s Napoléon ou l’amour nu and premiered Pierre Landy’s solo tenor work Les neuf portes de ton corps, based on a poem by Apollinaire.
Jean Miannay has received several distinctions, including the Grand Prize at the Concours Raymond-Duffaut d’Avignon (2018), the Young Artist Prize at the International Competition of Clermont-Ferrand (2019), the 3rd Prize at the International Singing Competition of Marmande (2023), the Festival Prize of Mafrà at the Cascais Opera International Voice Competition (2025), as well as the OFQJ Prize and the Theater Meiningen Prize at the International Singing Competition of Marmande (2025).
Since September 2025, he has been an Artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, in the class of Sophie Koch and Stéphane Degout.
