Alexander Warenberg, cello

Alexander Warenberg, born in 1998 in Voorburg, grew up in a family of professional musicians. He studied with Professor Monique Bartels at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. From 2016 onwards, he studied with Professor Frans Helmerson, from 2016–2019 at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin and subsequently at the Kronberg Academy.
In October 2016, he won the first prize and the audience prize at the National Cello Competition of the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam. He also won first prizes at the Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition, the Dutch Britten Cello Competition, and the National Competition of the Stichting Jong Muziektalent Nederland. In 2021, he received the GrachtenfestivalPrijs and the Elisabeth Everts Prize.
Alexander is active as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with several orchestras in the Netherlands and abroad. As a chamber musician, he has performed with Janine Jansen, Menahem Pressler, Denis Kozhukhin, Paolo Giacometti, and Liza Ferschtman.
He has been invited to perform at the Internationaal Kamermuziek Festival Utrecht, the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, the Festival Bad Ragaz in Switzerland, the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam, the Rolandseck Festival, CelloFest Finland, and he took part in the prestigious Verbier Festival Academy.
Alexander plays a violoncello by Alessandro D’Espine (Turin, 1832), formerly owned by Paul Tortelier – a generous loan from a member of the Stretton Society.
Artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel since September 2023, in the class of Gary Hoffman and Jeroen Reuling.
