Sir András Schiff begon op vijfjarige leeftijd piano te spelen bij E. Vadász. Hij studeerde aan de Franz-Liszt University of Music in Boedapest bij P. Kadosa, G. Kurtág en F. Rados en daarna in Londen bij G. Malcolm, waar hij in 1975 finalist was van de Leeds International Piano Competition. In 1979 verliet hij Hongarije. Hij vestigde zich in Londen, werd Brits staatsburger in 2001 en werd geridderd in het Britse Rijk (KBE). Sir András Schiff staat ook bekend om zijn lessen, met name zijn masterclasses, waarin werken van Bach en Beethoven centraal staan.
