In 1784 slaat Mozart een nieuwe stilistische weg in voor de compositie van zijn pianoconcerti. Hij schenkt het orkest immers nieuw aanzien door het een prominente plaats te geven, en ontwikkelt aanzienlijk de rol weggelegd voor de blaasinstrumenten die de thema’s uitdrukken, volledig of gefragmenteerd, en die in dialoog treden met de piano in een spel van imitatie en echo.

  • J. Haydn: Cello Concerto No. 1, in C major, Hob. VIIb:1

Dit concerto, opgedragen aan de hoofdcellist van het orkest van prins Nicolaas Esterházy, een grote vriend van Haydn, is in 1961 teruggevonden in Bohemen. Het werk wordt omkaderd door twee monothematische bewegingen, in de stijl van Vivaldi, terwijl men in het Adagio, het ‘bithematisme’, met name het gebruik in eenzelfde beweging, van twee verschillende thema’s, eigen aan de sonatevorm, ziet verschijnen. Tussen de subtiliteiten van het concerto vormt de verhulde intrede van de cello in de twee laatste bewegingen een techniek die Mozart zal hernemen en tot de perfectie zal ontwikkelen.
