De Amerikaan van Oostenrijkse afkomst Erich Wolfgang Korngold, wonderkind en succesvol operacomponist in Europa, bereikt het hoogtepunt van zijn carrière in de Hollywoodstudio’s. Zijn Vioolconcerto (1945), gecomponeerd aan het einde van zijn carrière bij Warner Bros., vormt een opmerkelijke reïncarnatie van zijn filmmuziek in een werk bestemd voor de concertzaal. Dit nostalgische, nagenoeg cinematografische concerto, gebaseerd op thema’s van vier films van tussen  1937 en 1939, lijkt wel een eerbetoon aan zijn Hollywoodjaren.
