Als erfgenaam van de grote romantische componisten tekent Barber in 1939 een lyrisch Vioolconcerto vervuld van aangrijpende emoties, in tegenstelling tot de atonaliteit en het twaalftoonstelsel populair in die tijd. Ook Korngold weigert de twaalftoonmuziek aan te hangen en richt zich veeleer tot filmmuziek. Zijn Celloconcerto is aanvankelijk gecomponeerd voor de film Deception alvorens het gepubliceerd werd en gespeeld werd in de concertzalen.
