De bijzonder opgebouwde Sonate voor viool en piano ontplooit zich uit een cyclische kern waarvan het wiegende ritme onophoudelijk wordt herhaald. De sonate was geschreven als huwelijksgeschenk voor Ysaÿe en bevat een derde beweging ontdaan van een formeel juk en met een intense bezieling die het genre van de romances opwekt. Ze eindigt op een canon waar de instrumenten ondanks alle moeilijkheden een dialoog met elkaar aangaan en vervolgens een hoogtepunt bereiken in een uitbundige vreugde.
