‘Niemand zal ooit zichzelf leren kennen.’ In volle Tweede Wereldoorlog baseerde Richard Strauss zich op dit vers van Goethe voor een nieuw, beklijvend orkestwerk. Metamorphosen, voltooid in 1945, drukt zijn ontsteltenis uit t.o.v. de bruutheid van het menselijk wezen, met zijn onstabiele en onpeilbare diepten. In die context brengt de aanhaling van Beethovens Eroica in de laatste maten een pijnlijke ironie aan het licht.
