Het Kwartet op. 13 geeft blijk van de bewondering die Mendelssohn had voor Beethoven, vermits de tonaliteit, de aanzet van de eerste beweging, alsook bepaalde thematische lijnen Opus 132 van die laatste lijken te citeren. De opmerkelijke Finale, die de thema’s verspreid over de eerste drie bewegingen vrij samenvat – een eerbetoon aan de finale van de Negende Symfonie ? – verheft Mendelssohn tot waardige opvolger van zijn voorbeeld.
