Het Pianokwartet op.41 is gecomponeerd tijdens de jaren 1870. Dat decennium en het daaropvolgende zien de opkomst van de grootste meesterwerken van Saint-Saëns, waarvan vele kenmerken delen, zoals de herhaling van de ritmische motieven of het gebruik van melodieën verwant met koraal. Die twee elementen komen terug en worden gecombineerd in de tweede beweging van dit pianokwartet, waarin de componist zich voor de laatste keer op vreemd terrein waagt.
