Op 28 september 1886 wordt in de stad Aarlen het huwelijk voltrokken van violist Eugène Ysaÿe. Onder de huwelijksgeschenken bevindt zich het manuscript voor een sonate voor viool en piano gecomponeerd door César Franck. In dat werk slaagt Franck erin zijn melodische kunst, maar ook zijn architecturale kennis van de muzikale vorm, met brio uit te drukken, waarbij hij de codes van de Sonate omgooit. Door zijn talloze kwaliteiten neemt dit werk al snel een leidende positie in binnen zowel het viool- als het cellorepertoire, want de transcriptie laat niet lang op zich wachten.
