Beethoven Piano Sonatas

Louis Lortie

Music Chapel, Studio Haas Teichen

Louis Lortie, piano

L. van Beethoven:
Sonata No. 21, in C major, for solo piano, op. 53, “Waldstein”

Sonata No. 22, in F major, for solo piano, op. 54

Sonata No. 23, in f minor, for solo piano, op. 57, “Appassiona”

Although the nickname ‘Appassionata‘ is not from Beethoven’s hand, it seems to well reflect the general spirit of this sonata and more specifically its first movement, in which the fiery momentum erupts to subdue even the musical form. The comparison Beethoven would have made between this sonata (as well as sonata op.31 nr.2) and Shakespeare’s The Tempest leads to the following words by Romain Rolland: ‘What is the general Stimmung of The Tempest?- the unleashing of the elementary forces of nature, passions, foolishness of man and the elements. And the domination of the Spirit… but doesn’t that just define Beethovenian art in its ripe period?’
