De grens tussen profaan en sacraal is bij wijlen vloeibaar in de muziek, zelfs met
zuiver instrumentale werken. Bij Bach en Mendelssohn zijn bepaalde melodieën immers
doordrongen van een innige bezieling die ze in een gebed omvormt. Zo ook bij
het Adagio uit Mendelssohns Tweede Cellosonate, dat de esthetiek van het koraal en
die van de recitatieve passages handig combineert.
De cello gaat op in een meditatieve zang gespeeld door de piano in religieus rijke arpeggio’s.
