De preludes die de zes suites inleiden, zijn opmerkelijk veelzijdig qua stijl en structuur. De vierde is doorspekt met technische moeilijkheden, terwijl ze cadenspassages aanbiedt waarin zich een ruime speelvrijheid kan ontplooien.
Er blijven twijfels bestaan over het precieze instrument waarvoor Bach zijn beroemde suites componeerde. De Vijfde Suite vergt een scordatura (de vierde snaar moet een toon lager dan de normale gestemd worden) en werd voor de luit herschreven door Bach zelf. De bestemming van de Zesde Suite is tevens complex, want, hoger dan de vijf andere, lijkt die te zijn bedoeld voor een violoncello piccolo, een vijfsnarige cello.
