In 1825 verschijnt de eerste gedrukte editie van de Zes sonates of etudes voor cellosolo
van Bach. Dient de term ‘etudes’ commerciële en pedagogische doeleinden, hij maakt geen gewag van de gigantische evolutie die die werken een eeuw daarvoor hebben veroorzaakt binnen de geschiedenis van de cello, nog beconcurreerd door de viola da gamba. De Suites verkennen virtuoos alle registers van het instrument, vertonen zijn expressief potentieel en wekken zelfs de illusie op van een polyfonisch contrapunt.
