Steve Reich wordt beschouwd als een van de grondleggers van het minimalisme. In zijn eerste experimenten op magneetband maakt hij gebruik van de techniek van ‘phase shifting’ (faseverschuiving), die hij vervolgens toepast op de instrumenten. Zijn dynamische en weerbarstige muziek, gebaseerd op repetitieve melodische en ritmische motieven, lijkt wel een weerspiegeling van het helse ritme van de stad. Hij laat zich ook inspireren door de traditionele Ghanese, Balinese en Hebreeuwse muziek, terwijl het kader en de rechtlijnigheid van de meticuleuze klankenarchitectuur behouden blijft.
