Mendelssohns Concerto voor twee piano’s vormt een ander jeugdwerk waarin de invloeden van zijn ouderen zich uiten, in het bijzonder van Bach, die hij enorm bewonderde. Jeugd, frisheid, vitaliteit, bedrijvigheid: allemaal indrukken nagelaten door dit vroegrijpe – want amper 15-jarige – genie. Het Vioolconcerto is dan weer zijn laatste werk voor solist en orkest, geschreven op, en daarbij mooi de afgelegde weg tonend, de overgang tussen twee muziekstijlen – het classicisme en de romantiek. Men vindt hier de charme van Mendelssohns stijl terug: tegelijk levendig en ontroerend.
