Vanaf zijn allereerste gepubliceerde opus benadert Mendelssohn kamermuziek vermetel,
waarbij het Klavierkwartet minder gewaardeerd werd dan het strijkkwartet
van zijn voorgangers. De klassieke erfenis is nog waarneembaar in de helderheid van de
structuren van het werk, zijn lichte texturen en de ‘hoofse’ figuraties van de piano, maar
dit werk getuigt reeds van een absolute controle van de grote structuren, een perfecte
beheersing van de modulaties en een bedrevenheid om de diepte van de emotie weer te geven
