Adam Newman, viola (1984, UK)

Based in Switzerland since 2015, the Lassus Quartet takes an innovative approach to chamber music, integrating choral singing into the original programming of new and old chamber music literature.

Coached principally by the members of the Hagen Quartet, with a significant influence from Rainer Schmidt, as well as Rita Wagner, Clive Brown, Valentin Erbene, Eberhard Feltz. They have been invited to perform at many festivals and chamber music series across Europe, including Switzerland, Spain, Germany, France, Norway and Portugal. They are regular guests at Wissembourg International Festival and MozartFest Würzburg. The quartet has been invited to partake in artist residencies in Aldeburgh, UK, and Yellow Barn, USA.

Carefully curated programs reflect their curiosity for historically-informed performance practice, contemporary composition, and franco-flemish renaissance polyphony.

The quartet embraces collaborations with poets, actors, dancers, singers and other instrumentalists, in an effort to expand the expressive palette they wish to share with the public.

The Lassus Quartet released their first album «Music in Silence» in the spring of 2019 in Barcelona, featuring compositions of Sciarrino and Ockeghem. The CD is accompanied by an art documentary film that records the musicians in the small Norwegian church where they committed the music to disc, in five days spent without any verbal communication whatsoever.

In September 2019, Lassus Quartett will be an artist in residence at the Music Chapel under the guidance of members of the Artemis Quartet.
