« Personne ne se connaitra soi-même ». En pleine guerre mondiale, ce vers de Goethe inspire à Richard Strauss une nouvelle œuvre instrumentale poignante. Metamorphosen, achevé en 1945, est l’expression de son désarroi face à la bestialité de l’être humain, dont les profondeurs sont instables et insondables. Dans ce contexte, la citation de l’ « Héroïque » de Beethoven au cours des dernières mesures laisse poindre une douloureuse ironie.
