Originally composed for clarinet, cello, and piano, Brahms quickly proposed a version of this Trio op. 114 with viola as a substitute for clarinet. Like the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings op. 115, the Trio op.114 – composed in 1891 – contains a renewed creative vigor characterized by works whose vital force does not suggest that only a few months earlier the composer had declared that he no longer wanted to compose.
