« Que peut-on faire après Beethoven ? », question que pose Schubert à son ami von Spaun et que de nombreux compositeurs continueront à se poser durant l’entièreté du XIXe siècle. L’héritage beethovénien est lourd à porter dans tous les domaines, celui de la symphonie, du quatuor à cordes, des sonates, ou encore des trios à clavier ; genre que Beethoven contribue à anoblir. Et si le trio Sonatensatz est une œuvre de jeunesse (1812), le Notturno et le célèbre Trio op.100 seront quant à eux des œuvres de maturité (1827) ; des œuvres dans lesquels Schubert réussit à imprimer sa marque, son identité.
