La créativité du jeune Mendelssohn s’exprime pleinement dans ses trois premiers
quatuors à clavier. Si l’op. 2 se distingue déjà par un Adagio aux modulations audacieuses et un court Intermezzo remplaçant le Scherzo habituel, l’op. 3 s’avère le plus
abouti, notamment par sa cohérence thématique, un même motif reliant entre eux les premiers thèmes des quatre mouvements.
L’« éternel tourbillon » du Scherzo plut à Goethe qui lui trouva un caractère poétique et merveilleux.
