Le quatuor op. 13 laisse transparaitre l’admiration que Mendelssohn vouait à Beethoven,
car la tonalité, l’amorce du premier mouvement, ainsi que certains contours
thématiques, ne sont pas sans rappeler l’op. 132 de ce dernier. Le remarquable Finale,
qui récapitule librement les thèmes disséminés dans trois premiers mouvements
– un hommage au finale de la Neuvième Symphonie ? – hisse Mendelssohn en digne héritier de son modèle.
