Bien qu’elle n’ait jamais pu accéder à une véritable carrière musicale à cause de sa
condition de femme, Fanny Mendelssohn a produit plus de 450 oeuvres, principalement
des lieder et des pièces pour piano, mais aussi un trio, un quatuor, une ouverture
et des cantates. Dans la Fantaisie, qui figure parmi ses deux seules compositions pour violoncelle et piano, les deux instruments s’accompagnent tour à tour plutôt que de dialoguer sur un pied d’égalité.
