À seulement dix-neuf ans, Enescu se dresse à la hauteur d’un Mendelssohn avec son Octuor, véritable chef-d’œuvre d’une grande complexité formelle. Dans cet édifice monumental apparaissent neuf thèmes savamment agencés. L’ambition déclarée du compositeur était que les quatre mouvements de l’œuvre se succèdent de manière à édifier ensemble un premier mouvement de symphonie, autrement dit, une gigantesque forme sonate.
