La frontière entre sacré et profane en musique est parfois poreuse, y compris au
sujet d’oeuvres purement instrumentales.
Chez Bach et Mendelssohn, certaines mélodies sont traversées d’un souffle fervent
qui les transforme en prière. C’est le cas de l’Adagio de la deuxième Sonate pour violoncelle de Mendelssohn, qui combine habilement l’esthétique du choral et celle du
récitatif. Le violoncelle se perd en un chant méditatif porté par les arpèges égrenés religieusement par le piano.
