Contrary to popular belief, in opera, we always liked to laugh, laugh, and laugh some more.
In France, at the end of the nineteenth century, the production of comic lyric is vast: one laughs at a little with comic opera, much with the opera-bouffe, and soon also with operetta. The purpose of this program is not to trace the history of these genres, or even to compare them, but rather to explore the comic possibilities that this music has to offer.
