When he decided to set the text of the Stabat Mater to music, Dvořák was familiar with the pain of losing a child, having endured the deaths of three children in the two years before the work was completed. These ordeals inspired him to write a deeply meditative and intense piece, in which the orchestra intervenes with transparency and gentleness, without ever overpowering the vocal section with theatrical effects.
