R. Strauss : Metamorphosen, TrV. 290

‘No one can really know himself’. In the midst of a world war, this verse by Goethe inspired Richard Strauss to write a poignant new instrumental work. Metamorphosen, completed in 1945, is an expression of his dismay at the bestiality of human beings, whose depths are unstable and unfathomable. In this context, the quotation from Beethoven’s Eroica in the final bars is painfully ironic.
