C. M. von Weber: Euryanthe, Overture, op. 81

Twenty years before Wagner’s first great successes, Carl Maria von Weber was already forging the identity of German romantic opera. With Euryanthe, his second opera, he anticipated the main characteristics of Wagnerian works: elimination of the Singspiel, use of leitmotifs, plots inspired by the Middle Ages, and treating the orchestra as a protagonist in its own right.

J. Brahms: Double Concerto in A Minor, op. 102

The Double Concerto, which premiered in Cologne in October 1887, is Brahms’s last orchestral composition and, for Clara Schumann, a “work of reconciliation”. In his Double Concerto, the two solo instruments engage in a dialogue and try to outshine each other, like two friends driven by a shared competitive spirit. Brahms, who had known and then lost such a friendship with the violinist Joachim, tried to rekindle it by inviting him to perform this concerto at its premiere, which Joachim accepted. Brahms also slipped in a theme dear to his friend, and the music led to their reconciliation.

A. Dvořák: Cello Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, op. 104

A cornerstone of the cello repertoire, Dvořák’s Concerto in B Minor offers imposing, triumphant orchestral writing from the outset. While the first movement can sometimes feel like an epic, the second resembles a melancholy song, no doubt inspired by his nostalgia for his homeland (Dvořák was living in the United States at the time) and the illness of his beloved sister-in-law. After her death, the composer extended the joyous finale with a coda tinged with a sense of farewell.
