P. Tchaikovski : Valse-Scherzo, in C major, op. 34, TH. 58

Although it is a mature work, Brahms’s Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano partly looks back to his youth, his reveries and his violence. The piano part plays a leading role, sometimes taking precedence over the violin in a virtuosity reminiscent of the piano concertos.

For his part, Poulenc struggled to write his sonata for violin, and it was only after several unsuccessful attempts (which were destroyed) that he set about writing this work in memory of Federico Garcia Lorca. “The monster is ready”, he wrote about this sonata. “I will begin the realization. It’s not bad, I think, and is in any case very different from the endless ‘violin-melody line’ of nineteenth-century French sonatas.”
