L. van Beethoven: Serenade for string trio, in D major, op. 8
I. Marcia. Allegro; Adagio
II. Minuet. Allegretto
III. Adagio
IV. Allegretto alla polacca
V. Tema con variazioni. Andante quasi allegretto

In November 1792, Beethoven arrived in Vienna to take lessons with Haydn and then, when the latter left for London, with Albrechtsberger. While Beethoven said that he learned nothing from Haydn, Albrechtsberger would say of his student: “He is an exalted, musical freethinker (…), he has learned nothing and will never do anything decent.” History proved him wrong…

The serenade composed between 1795 and 1797 already shows how strongly independent this master in the making was. Lighter than a string trio, the serenade opens and concludes with a March, but also hints at a rarer aspect with its Allegretto alla Polacca, a movement which, as its name indicates, was inspired by Polish folklore.
