“What can we do after Beethoven?” is a question Schubert asked his friend von Spaun and one that composers would continue to ask themselves throughout the nineteenth century. The weight of Beethoven’s legacy can be felt in all areas, whether symphonies, string quartets, sonatas or keyboard trios, a genre that Beethoven helped to ennoble. While the Sonatensatz trio is an early work (1812), the Notturno and the famous Trio Op. 100 are mature works (1827), works in which Schubert succeeds in leaving his mark, his identity.
