R. Strauss: Sextet from Capriccio, op. 85

The Pastoral Symphony expresses, in Beethoven’s words, “the impressions that man enjoys in the countryside”. Through the different movements of the work, the composer guides the listener in his auditory country ballad, beginning with the “awakening of cheerful impressions upon arriving in the countryside”, followed by a “scene by the brook”, then the “merry Gathering of country folk” which “Thunder” and “Storm” break up, before concluding with the “Shepherd’s song” expressing “cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm”.

Based on the overture to his last opera, Strauss’s Capriccio demonstrates the richness of the composer’s harmonic palette, but also the daily violence faced by artists under the Nazi regime. An opponent of the regime, Strauss left Bavaria for Vienna in order to protect his daughter-in-law. In Vienna, against all odds, he was protected by Baldur von Schirach, who was found guilty of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials. It was at von Schirach’s house that the Capriccio was created. A compromise of principle to ensure his security.
