The quartet op. 13 shows the admiration Mendelssohn had for Beethoven, because the tonality, the beginning of the first movement, as well as certain thematic contours, are reminiscent of op. 132. The remarkable Finale, which freely recapitulates the themes scattered in the first three movements, is a tribute to the finale of the – a tribute to the finale of the Ninth Symphony? – elevates Mendelssohn as a worthy heir to his model.
