Although she was never able to achieve a real musical career because of her status as a woman, Fanny Mendelssohn produced more than 450 works, mainly lieder and piano pieces, but also a trio, a quartet, an overture, and cantatas. In the Fantasy, which is among his only two compositions for cello and piano, the two instruments accompany each other in turn rather than dialoguing on an equal footing.
